Odisha's Mo School Abhiyan: When Alumni Became the Solution
A statewide movement where former students reconnect with their schools, transforming education through collective ownership, contribution, and the belief that every alumni can give back.
Across India, thousands of government schools struggle with similar problems — poor infrastructure, limited resources, and declining community engagement. Over time, many schools lose the emotional connection with the communities they once served. Alumni move away, opportunities expand elsewhere, and the bond between former students and their schools gradually fades.
In Odisha, this was also the reality for many government schools. Classrooms needed repairs, libraries lacked books, and many schools struggled to provide the learning environment that children deserved. While governments could build policies and allocate budgets, one powerful resource remained largely untapped: the alumni of these schools.
The idea behind Mo School Abhiyan emerged from a simple but powerful thought — every successful individual was once a student somewhere. If former students could reconnect with their schools, they could become partners in transforming education.
Launched by the Government of Odisha, Mo School Abhiyan (meaning "My School Campaign") aimed to build a statewide movement where alumni actively contribute to the development of their former schools. Instead of relying solely on government funding, the initiative sought to mobilize the emotional bond between alumni and their alma mater.
The approach was both innovative and practical.
Under the program, alumni were encouraged to contribute to their schools in multiple ways. Some offered financial support for building classrooms, libraries, laboratories, or sports facilities. Others contributed knowledge, mentorship, or career guidance for students. Many professionals volunteered their time to inspire students and guide them toward future opportunities.
To make the system sustainable and trustworthy, the government introduced a matching contribution model. When alumni contributed funds for school development, the government added additional support to amplify the impact. This ensured that even small alumni contributions could lead to meaningful improvements in schools.
But the transformation was not just about money.
Mo School Abhiyan created a platform where communities rediscovered their connection with education. Alumni who had become doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and civil servants returned to the same classrooms where they had once studied. Their presence inspired students and reminded communities that education could truly change lives.
Gradually, thousands of schools across Odisha began to experience visible improvements. Libraries expanded, laboratories were established, school buildings were renovated, and sports facilities improved. At the same time, students gained access to mentors who could guide them about careers, higher education, and life beyond the classroom.
Most importantly, the program restored something deeper — the sense of collective ownership over public education.
Schools were no longer seen only as government institutions. They became shared community assets, shaped by the contributions of former students, teachers, parents, and local leaders.
Today, Mo School Abhiyan stands as one of the most powerful examples of alumni-driven school transformation in India. The initiative has connected thousands of alumni networks with their schools and mobilized significant contributions for improving educational infrastructure and opportunities.
The real success of Mo School Abhiyan lies not only in buildings or facilities but in the mindset it created.
It showed that the responsibility of improving education does not lie only with governments or institutions. Every individual who once benefited from a school has the potential to give back and strengthen the system for future generations.
A former student returning to support their school sends a powerful message to the next generation: "I studied here. This school shaped my life. Now I am here to help shape yours."
This is the spirit of "I Am the Solution."
